Naturalist John Muir was instrumental in creating the modern conservation movement. Among his many achievements, he shared the wonders of Yosemite with Americans in the east, and thanks to his work, Yosemite became protected land - 122 years ago today, Congress officially declared the place a national park.
He also had the wild man locks and beard that no three-piece suit and watch chain could tame.
